Rickmansworth SC hosted the 2nd 2019 M25 trophy event for the Firefly class on Saturday 11th May on a lovely balmy breeze type of day. With the Wilson Trophy, Optimist commitments and injury keeping many of the class stalwarts away; only a small fleet of die-hards managed to trail to Troy Lake. There they were met by bacon butties and tea served by Caroline Webb – as ever the enthusiastic class captain! The visitors were joined by a small but lively local Ricky fleet.
It was great to see Johnny Bickford return to the fleet after a short break, crewed by his son Charles who is a mere five years old. Charles had a good day with some mixed weather experience, namely a sudden cloudburst and squall at the end of the second back to back morning race. Though spirits were dampened a bit, he was not phased by his first crewing experience at an Open meeting.
The first race got off in a light northerly. Richard and Caroline Webb and Matt Thornton and Laura Bevan (QMSC/UL) in Purple Doris led off, closely followed by Lucy Boreham and Rachel Crebbin (Chichester YC) in Willow and the Bickford boys. Current class national champion, Guy Davison (Llangorse SC) in Dillon crewed by local youngster Toby Mc Farlane, was looking rather rusty after his early morning and got off to a slow start.
But the seemed to wake up after two rounds of the lake and slowly clawed his way up. A slightly fluky beat had a bit of Ricky luck put the rapid retiree right on the leading two boats transoms. On the next beat Guy and Toby took some good shifts to take the lead which they held to the fourth lap and the finish. Lucy and Rachel held second place.
The wind lightened for the second race, which Dillon made best use of at the start getting away on port ahead of the fleet. By now Toby, Guy’s local crew had worked it all out and shepherded Guy expertly around the course! The rest of the fleet had a great race with lots of place changes, but Dillon stayed ahead managing to avoid those Troy lake calm patches for once. Again Lucy and Rachel fought off the challengers and took second place. Matt and Laura took third.
The fleet enjoyed the third race whilst Guy had a nap, claiming it was a very early start for person of his years…. Johnny and Charles led with Matt and Laura hot on their heels in second and Richard and Caroline taking third place.
Overall results (2 races of 3 to count)
1st Dillon Guy Davison and Toby Mc Farlane Llangorse SC
2nd Lucy Boreham and Rachel Crebbin Chichester YC
3rd Johnny and Charles Bickford Oxford SC
Many thanks Rickmansworth for hosting us, Martin Smethers PRO, and for providing great close racing, no lake weed and generous hospitality and we hope to return with even more competitors next year!
