Official Notice:- Firefly National Championships 2020 will not go ahead at Torbay

Further to the announcement on 28 April 2020, the committee of the National Firefly Association has continued to assess the impact of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic on class events this season and, in particular, the National Championships scheduled to take place in Torbay between 1 and 7 August. While the committee has been encouraged by signs that some of the more stringent lockdown conditions are being eased, it remains likely that social distancing measures will remain in place for some time yet. In conjunction with the Organising Authority, Royal Torbay Yacht Club (RTYC), the committee has reached the difficult conclusion that running a championship event whilst these sorts of restrictions continue is not feasible. We are therefore reluctantly announcing that this year’s Firefly National Championships will not be proceeding.

The committee understands that this news will come as a disappointment to a large number of people, but it felt that as a responsible organisation it needed to consider the broader impact, including on the many volunteers involved in running a national championship. It also felt that to delay a decision in respect of the event any longer would place an unacceptable burden on a small number of people within the Association and RTYC.

With this year’s event cancelled, we will obviously not be accepting any further entries. For those competitors who have already entered, we are offering to hold those entries over at 2020 prices to the 2021 Championships to be held in Looe between 7 and 13 August 2021. For any competitors who have entered but are unable to attend the 2021 event, full refunds will be available.

The NFA is pleased to see that as restrictions on exercise have been relaxed, a number of members have been taking the opportunity to get sailing in their Fireflies. While we don’t know when things will return to a more normal state, we look forward to the re-start of competitive sailing and we are hopeful that a number of events planned for September – November can still go ahead, including open meetings at Rickmansworth, Chipstead, Papercourt, West Oxfordshire and Spinnaker, and the Inland Championships, due to take place at South Staffordshire SC on 14 and 15 November.  In the meantime, please share your Firefly-related photos and stories on the class social media pages.

Keep safe and happy sailing

Your NFA Committee.
